OPENING SONG
(SUNG BY CITIZENS OF AMSTERDAM)

CHORUS:
Anne Frank! Anne Frank!
What happened to her stank!
But happily
She kept a diary

    VOICE OVER:
May 1940. Nazi Germany occupies Holland.

    SOLDIER:
Welcome to Amsterdam, the new Berlin!
We hope you've all heard the news!
A wonderful city for all to live in!
Except for, of course, the Jews!

    A MAN ON THE STREET:
France will save us - our staunch defenders!

    NEWSBOY:
    Paris surrenders today!

    MAN:
    Oy Vey.

CHORUS:
Anne Frank! Anne Frank!
What happened to her stank!
But happily
She kept a diary

    V/O:
Two years later, a young girl is given a diary for her birthday.

    DIARY:
I'm your Diary, you should hide me
Open me up and write inside me
Tell me your innermost secrets, too...
No one will ever read me but you!

    ANNE:
Oh Diary, you will be such
Comfort -- you'll help me escape from my rut
I can't even tell you how much
I trust you -- OW! Paper cut!

CHORUS:
Anne Frank! Anne Frank!
What happened to her stank!
But happily
She kept a diary

    V/O:
Anne's father, Otto Frank, decides that his family must go into hiding to escape the Nazis.

    MRS. FRANK:
    I'm far too asthmatic
    To live in an attic
Oh, Otto, the answer is no.

    SOLDIER:
    Pardon me, are you Jewish?

    MRS. FRANK:
    Let's go.

CHORUS:
Anne Frank! Anne Frank!
What happened to her stank!
But happily
She kept a diary

    V/O:
And so the Frank family, along with the Van Daan family and Mr. Dussel, moved into a small set of rooms which Anne called "The Secret Annex." And it is in this Secret Annex that our story begins...

CHORUS:
Anne Frank! Anne Frank!
What happened to her stank!
But happily
She kept a diary
