Two years later, a young girl is given a diary for her birthday.

DIARY:
I'm your Diary, you should hide me

ANNE:

Comfort -- you'll help me escape from my rut
I can't even tell you how much
I trust you -- OW! Paper cut!

Anne's father, Otto Frank, decides that his family must go into hiding to escape the Nazis.

MRS. FRANK:
I'm far too asthmatic
To live in an attic
